Practical Tips for Dealing with Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that, unlike many others, is primarily managed by the patient. That said, it means one is responsible for the “making” and maintaining of daily treatments and adjustments. Consequently, diabetes management takes time, so having an assortment of diabetes tips can make a difference. The following tips will help you in your daily diabetes management.

Tip #1 – Get plenty of rest

While most of us know that being active helps with weight loss and maintenance, it may be a bit of a surprise to find that getting enough sleep (7-8 hours) is just as beneficial. Research shows that better sleep habits are an essential part of any diet plan, especially those with diabetes.

Tip #2 – Watch what you drink

Fruit juices, sodas and alcohol are high in sugar and only add unnecessary calories. Replace with water and the occasional glass of tea (unless it is green tea, which has been shown to be quite helpful if consumed on a regular basis).

Tip #3 – Eat throughout the day

Rather than consuming three large meals, eat 5-6 small meals; this is the key to having a fast metabolism. In addition, frequent meals prevent binges and lower cravings.

Tip #4 - Not all fat is bad

The body needs some fats to survive. These healthy fats are Omega 3, 6 and 9.

Tip #5 – Eat slowly & don’t be afraid to try something new

Don’t get burned out by eating the same 4-5 vegetables all the time. As the saying goes, “variety is the spice of life,” and nowhere is that more true than with eating. Make it a goal to try at least one new fruit, veggie, recipe, etc. a month. Also, take your time when eating so your body has time to tell your brain it has had enough.

Tip # 6 – Find a way to relax

Whether it is gardening, reading, swimming or something else, take some time at least once a week to relax and unwind. This will help keep negative feelings at bay and can actually help maintain your blood glucose levels.

Tip #7 – Diabetes is what you have, not who you are!

Focus on living life to its fullest rather than just merely dealing with diabetes. Yes, you have to follow a healthy meal plan, get exercise and test your blood glucose levels, but you don’t have to stay focused on diabetes 24-7. Enjoy life to the fullest potential – diabetes and all.

Tip #8 – Don’t try to deal with diabetes alone

Get involved with a diabetes support group, an educational program, or an online forum or community. Having someone to share your triumphs and trials with makes living with diabetes easier.

Tip #9 – Prevent diabetic lows with pre-made snack packs

If you are often at the movies, a concert, church, or other location where a noisy wrapper would be a distraction, make your own snack packs. Use a small zip-top bag and fill with peanuts, jelly beans, etc., according to what you need to treat a low – usually 15 grams is enough. That way, you will have a quick, portion-controlled snack whenever you need it. You may even want to keep a few of these in strategic locations, like your bedside or in  your desk at work.

Tip #10 – Be prepared for doctor visits

When you go to the doctor’s office, be sure you have any questions or concerns written down so you won’t forget anything or ‘waste’ his or her time. Tell your doctor ahead of time that you have a list of things to discuss. Be open and willing to try new diabetes management approaches.

While this is only a short list, implementing as many of these tips as possible is a great way to make the most of living with diabetes. After all, life should be enjoyed – diabetes and all!
