Vitamin A

PDF Print E-mail

Vitamin A is classed as a support nutrient for diabetes. It does not affect blood sugar levels, but has been reported to be of use in treating diabetic neuropathy.

I have read of one study that used vitamin a topically to treat the feet of diabetics. There was improvement in neuropathy symptoms. The researchers also tested for vitamin a toxicity, but did not find that this use caused negative affects the way vitamin a overdoses can.

Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin. That means that if you get too much, it does not flush out of your system the way water soluble vitamins do. Instead, your body stores the extra. This can lead to a form of overdosing with this vitamin in particular. This doesn't really occur from eating natural foods, but as a result of excess supplementation. I forget what all the symptoms are, but headaches are one of them.

You'd not want to take extra vitamin A internally, except under advice from your doctor, and you should get advice before you use it topically also.
