Talk about a hot topic... This is another supplement that people are rushing to make extravagant claims about, and it has been linked to all sorts of conditions.
Most studies have focused on heart and muscular deseases, and some neurological diseases. There is growing evidence that Coenzyme Q10 may indeed positively affect many of those conditions, including muscular dystrophy and mitochondrial or metabolic deseases. Results on athletes for improved performance have varied, and this is likely because of the way in which dietary supplements work.
I tried this, and it gave me migraines, so I could not ever determine whether it might help blood sugar control, or any other problems. This supplement has also been connected to negative side effects at doses of 120 mg per day and higher, so it is advisable to keep the amounts low, and exercise caution. If you take it, and see no positive results, then discontinue its use to reduce the risk of negative side effects. Also, because this supplement may lower blood pressure, caution is advised for people with blood pressure issues, or who are on medications which already lower blood pressure. It is an enzyme that is produced in the body, but which is found to be low in a wide range of conditions, including diabetes. The controversy comes in when you look at the "cause or effect" aspect. Does diabetes cause low levels, or do low levels cause diabetes? Preliminary testing does not show improvement in blood sugar levels from this supplement, but it still may have value for diabetics, because it HAS been shown to mitigate symptoms from many diseases which result from diabetes, or which have a negative affect on diabetes.
