Mangosteen

PDF Print E-mail

Another in a long line of exotic fruits to come to the fore in recent years. Mangosteen is an Asian fruit, which is restricted from importation, but juices and preserves are now becoming available.

Like most fruits, it is high in antioxidants, and contains a high percentage of a particular type called xanthones (of 200 identified, it contains about 40 according to one source).

Antioxidants help to slow the cellular degeneration associated with aging, which can provide a significant benefit to diabetics as well.

Mangosteen has been associated in research with lowering cancer risks, helping to control cholesterol, and helping to fight off specific types of serious infections.

The other benefits attributed to mangosteen have the familiar ring of the "cure all" listings, and you will find diabetes treatment listed generically in the list. It is another "who knows" listing which suggests but offers no corroboration either in theory or in actual research.

As a fruit, it is a significant source of carbohydrate, so if you choose to use it, then you need to count and measure it.

Monitor your glucose carefully if you choose to use this, and work with your doctor.
